Winter is a great time to visit Acadia. It is not as cold as you might think. Fierce northeast storms bring large waves with heavy snow in some places, rain nearest the ocean and a slushy mix in between. Average annual snowfall is reported as 61"; but last winter we had nearly no snow and in the winter before that we must have had well over 100" of snow. When there is snow, Acadia is heaven. Hiking trails are dangerous because ice spreads over them. Stay on the carriage roads unless you have crampons or there is a good snow cover and you have snow shoes. Most of the 27-mile park loop road is closed except for a short section along the ocean and a short section near Jordan Pond. Snowmobiles are allowed on the park loop road, but not on the carriage roads, except for a short section near Eagle Lake. Some of the carriage roads are groomed for cross country skiing. Cadillac Mountain Sports in Bar Harbor rents cross country skiing gear. Most stores, restaurants, and accommodations are closed; but you'll find a place to stay without much trouble. Towns on the island are nearly deserted. The free Island Explorer buses are not running. There are no crowds and always plenty of parking. Viewing the sky at night will be a very cold activity.
