The island was named by a French explorer referring to the barren mountains that dominate the landscape. The original French would be something like "days-air". Most people pronounce it either like a sweet that you eat after a main meal or like a dry and barren place. The mountains of MDI are hardly dry, but many of them are barren; and MDI is certainly a sweet place to visit.
