There are very few beaches on Mount Desert Island. Removing shells is not allowed in Acadia National Park, and there aren't many anyway. Clams and mussels are found in mud flats at low tide. A license issued by the town is required for shellfishing, and there are limits on the amount that can be taken. Certain areas are closed to clamming from time to time, either because of pollution or because of a need to rebuild. Information on shellfishing in the Town of Bar Harbor is available at
